Back in 1849, when many settlers started flocking to California for the Gold Rush, the Cucamonga Rancho, which occupied part of Upland, was nothing more than a place for settlers to pass through. That’s until the arrival of George Chaffey in 1882. This was the man who created the irrigation system to this region, sold 190 acres for a total value of $28,500, and started a colony that would later be recognized as the second largest citrus acreage in the state. Uplands original name was “North Upland” or “Magnolia” however that name was already taken. The name shrunk to just Upland after the name “Upland Citrus Association” back in 1902. Upland then request to be its own city so, on May 06, 1906, the San Bernardino Board of Supervisors conducted a two-day hearing. Nearly 30 years later, Upland’s boundaries were redrawn to include that land that was annexed in Ontario’s 1902 expansion. More details can be found in the following article.
