Rancho Cucamonga History

An article created by sbcounty.gov believes that the name “Cucamonga” came from a Shoshone word meaning “sandy place.” Originally a Native American settlement, Rancho Cucamonga later became a route for the Old Spanish Trail from Cajon Pass and the road from the Pueblo of Los Angeles and Mission San Gabriel to San Bernardino. When Rancho Cucamonga first started developing in the 1800’s, the city was first recognized for its vast fields of grapes and winery. While vines were planted early in 1838, its wine history didn’t start until the 1900’s when a man by the name of Secondo Guasti (an Italian immigrant) founded the Italian Vineyard Co. In fact, with over 5,000 acres they were known as one of the biggest contiguous vineyards. However, in today’s times, Rancho Cucamonga wineries are practically gone.
