One of the first inhabitants of the city of Montclair was the Serrano Indians. Their village originally stood in the banks of a sycamore tree-lined creek. The city of Montclair was nothing more than a grazing land and watering whole until the 1980s. It wasn’t until a woman by the name of Mrs. Edward Frazer founded “The Township of Marquette” which would then lead to a viable community. The first settlers came in around 1907 with a town name “Monte Vista.” It wasn’t until April 8, 1958, that the voters of this town wanted to change their name to Montclair.
